Towpath Explorers & the Weavers’ Quest 2019
An immersive family adventure, a playful journey inspired by the history of the Weavers’ Triangle. Players will enjoy a magical experience as they follow a guided trail, meeting some interesting characters and undertaking challenges along the way.
Mid Pennine Arts and Thompson’s Yard have created an intriguing quest that entertains as it educates, as part of Burnley Canal Festival’s Meanwhile on the Towpath… events. This is a newly designed version of the hugely popular, competition-based Explorers’ trail that went down so well with explorers of all ages at BCF 2018.
The game is set in the late 18th Century where mechanisation of the weaving industry is upon us but a skilled hand weaver is still as good and as fast as a machine. Players take on the role of the weaver, following a guided trail through a series of challenges, meeting some extraordinary characters along the way, in order to collect the equipment, materials and good luck they will need to turn a profit and avoid catastrophe on the cobbled road to success.
Once players have completed the trail they will return to the Cotton Exchange installation for a theatrical reveal of the results of their hard work and their subsequent position on the leader board. The trail will begin and end at the Weavers’ Triangle Visitors Centre at Burnley Wharf by the Leeds and Liverpool Canal which tells the story of the area, the canal and the cotton. The trail winds along the canal towpath until it reaches the canal’s famous ‘straight mile’, then it leaves the towpath to head through town and back to the Visitor Centre, and will take between 30-60 mins – dependent on how fast you walk and how fast you solve the clues!
The quest is FREE and suitable for all ages, and will be especially enjoyed by families (please note that children must be accompanied by an adult). To ensure everyone has the best possible experience we will stagger registration throughout the day. Please select the 15 minute window that would best suit you to start on the trail, and then simply arrive at the Weavers’ Triangle Visitor Centre to collect your score card and map during that time.
Mid Pennine Arts have been collaborating with artists Thompson’s Yard on the Towpath Explorer quests since 2016, and their creative adventures for families are characterised by beautiful design, engaging stories and interactive gameplay.
