About Mid Pennine Arts

Mid Pennine Arts is a commissioning agency, working through collaboration to create high quality art in response to the rich and diverse contexts of North West England. Based in the Pennines, we have a long and powerful track record, working with artists to rise to the exciting challenges posed by dramatic and often beautiful rural and post-industrial landscapes, hand in hand with their diverse and resilient communities.
We believe in the transformative power of contemporary art. We work in some of the poorest communities in the UK, but we deliver ambitious, challenging work that has won national and international awards and achieves profound and lasting social and economic outcomes.
Our local context is all important, informing new work that brings new life and new audiences to magical heritage sites and struggling high streets alike. From ancient manors to obsolete railways, from derelict mills to windswept moorland, Mid Pennine Arts applies that transformative power to the living heritage of our region, giving national and international artists the opportunity to work within one of the most exciting contexts in Europe.
Created as a partnership, we develop our most successful work through partnerships, networks and creative collaborations. We deliver programmes in public spaces that integrate the best art with innovative and creative learning opportunities for young and old alike alongside ambitious and successful environmental enhancement and improvement.
Added value is central to our success, delivering physical, social and economic regeneration aligned with key local strategies, developing a heightened sense of place and pride in the communities we work with and enabling them to shape their local environments and their futures.
With over four decades of commissioning experience, MPA’s longevity is testament to the soundness of our vision and the integrity of a philosophy rooted in the belief that art can play a major role in developing, nurturing and completing sustainable communities.
