Burnley Canal Festival 2016

11am to 5pm at Sandygate Square and locations along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal

Take A Slow Boat to Burnley for this enlarged, bicentennial edition of Burnley Canal Festival at August bank holiday weekend.

Developed with Burnley Canal Trust and partners, this special 2016 event will celebrate 200 years of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.  Artist commissions, performance and spectacle, workshops and waterborne activities will take all the family on a trail of magic and discovery through Burnley’s unique canalside environment.

MPA is delighted to be working on the festival in a new partnership with events company extraordinaire, Deco Publique, creators of brilliant events like Morecambe’s Vintage by the Sea.  The collaboration is made possible as part of the Super Slow Way programme for Pennine Lancashire.  See you there!

When and Where

The festival will take place on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 August 2016.  It will incorporate a hub of programmed activity at the regenerated Sandygate Square where visitors can enjoy the spaces as a festival site for the first time, including artisan craft stalls, high quality street food traders, participatory performance and folk influenced music.  The event will also reveal to visitors a more extensive experience of the canalside as they follow a 'string of pearls' along the towpath, enjoying artists commissions and an Explorers' Trail along the way, and towards the second and third festival space.  Arriving first at Burnley Wharf and stopping to see family friendly content including a traditional Carousel and Punch & Judy.  Moving onto Finsley Gate, audiences will see the space transformed into an arena of art, performance and making inspired by the natural environment.
