Waterside, Wyre & Lumb
Viaduct at Lumb Mill
Introduction
The projects below were all initially part of the REMADE scheme, planning and development took place on each project in various degrees. The selected sites were taken out of the scheme once REMADE was disbanded and therefore show early stages of development.
Creative Engagement Plans have also been developed for each site and all await implementation dependant on future funding.
Lumb Viaduct
Project Information
Lancashire County Council’s Remade team, funded by the Northwest Development Agency (NWDA), planned to construct a new Greenway in Rossendale as part of their commitment to tackling the region’s derelict land problem.
The Greenway was similar to other projects, such as the Preston to Bamber Bridge and Padiham Greenways, in that is was to be constructed along the part of the Lancashire and Yorkshire disused railway line between Irongate Lane, Irwell Vale and Stubbins Vale Rd, Stubbins.
The site at the time comprised of approximately 17 hectares of derelict, underused and neglected land, situated in the valley of the River Irwell, at the southern end of the Borough of Rossendale.
Contributing to the REMADE agenda, Mid Pennine Arts’ Creative Regeneration programme aimed to inspire and involve local communities in the familiarisation, use and design of their environment, inspired by and working with national and international artists and designers.
Lumb Viaduct formed a vital section of this important recreational facility. The beautiful, grade 2 listed structure spanned stunning countryside and provided a focus for the route and the surrounding area. The existing Viaduct at present is not suitable for pedestrians and a key objective of the REMADE scheme was to introduce safe pedestrian, cycle and horse access across the viaduct.
The Steering Group and Mid Pennine Arts invited submissions for a design proposal which was to lead to the creation of a major piece of contemporary art /design work focusing on Lumb Viaduct.
An iconic, sculptural design was sought that would harmonise with the existing viaduct, provide a focal point at each end and provide a practical solution to upgrading the accessibility of this section of the route.
The project plans were approved and the viaduct commission gained planning consent, however the project is awaiting funds before it can move forward.
Waterside Colne
Project Information
Artist residencies were to be the focus for the site, its history, documentation and future use forming a large part of the community engagement consultation. It was proposed that the residencies would involve workshops and events, engaging the community and schools and allowing their ideas and designs to feed into the commissions. Along with the artists, they would influence the structure of the site and it’s potential future use. Two gateway sculptures creating two medium scale commissions were also to take place. Commissioning was originally scheduled to take place in late 2010, taking place over the following months up until late 2011.
Although the Creative Programme plans for this site were approved, it was decided that the project would not go ahead as it wasn't considered a priority site for REMADE.
Wyre
Project Information
There is a great deal of potential in this area and is still open to possibilities dependent on our partners. The initial consultation of the first stages of a Creative Programme were undertaken and a steering group organised, however the project is awaiting funds before it can move forward.
