Spinning Stories, Swapping Songs

The project engaged children, parents and staff from Haslingden Children’s Centre with Claire Morgan’s installation No Match at Helmshore Mills Textile Museum. The installation is part of Mid Pennine Arts’ Contemporary Heritage series of commissioned artwork.
Working with music leaders, Zoe Greenhalgh and Beth Allen over a half term, the project involved events at Helmshore Mills Textile Museum and a series of music sessions at the Children’s Centre. The sessions were inspired by the cheeky rodents hiding inside the No Match piece! They focused on the development of music and literacy through the sharing of familiar songs and repeating of stories to internalise story structure.
The project has the following outcomes:
- Improve personal, social and emotional development
- Improve language and literacy development
- Encourage children to share songs and learn about one another’s cultural heritage
- Improve quality and standards of music delivery for children
- Embed learning in host organisations
- Introduce families to atmospheric local heritage site
Spinning Stories, Swapping Songs was generously supported by the National Lottery’s Youth Music programme.
