Exploring the West Pennine Moors

West Pennine Moors (c) Steve Messam
We have set artist Steve Messam loose on the West Pennine Moors, exploring the environment and imagining the creative possibilities of this magnificant and diverse landscape. We won't be seeing any Fairhaven Bubbles type installations though, the sailing lakes of the moors are far too windy!
Read Steve's blog and learn what he discovered and what this means...
'The problem was how to make them visible enough to be useable. Towers are big, solid constructions. It’s really, really windy up the top. This in itself is part of the character of the moors. To the west are the plains out to the Lancashire Coast where the prevailing weather rolls in relentlessly without obstruction. Permanent structures big enough to be seen from any other point would be very costly and not appropriate on a rare wilderness landscape. Temporary structures would again be susceptible to weather conditions too much.
The solution? Why battle the elements, when you can use them.'
Artist Walk on the West Pennine Moors - Friday 12 April
A small group joined Steve for an informal talk/workshop on the West Pennine Moors looking at landscapes and unearthing the layers of narrative and stories that make them, as well as documenting those layers through photography. We've asked all the participants to share their images from the day with us on Flickr.
